Determining the Version of php in Use

Create a file called phpinfo.php on your server, with the following contents:

  <?php
  print phpinfo();
  ?>

Note - you may need to change permissions on the file (especially if you are using a copy of the file you had left earlier, and had removed access permissions on it:

  chmod u+r phpinfo.php

Then call that file through your browser. Note that you need to know where you placed it in relation to the calling url - whether it is at the root, or in a subdirectory. For example:

  http://www.mydomain.com/phpinfo.php

This will display a lot of information about your php environment.

IMPORTANT - phpinfo displays enough information that it is a significant benefit to a hacker trying to gain access to your system. Once you have collected all the information you need, i STRONGLY recommend you either delete the file, or change the permissions so that it is no longer accessible:

  chmod a-rwx phpinfo.php
