Raspberry PI - Running an X Session (on a Mac)

Running VNC Session from a Mac to the Pi

(to be added)

Updating Kernel

  sudo rpi-update

Updating Packages

  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade

Updating Distribution

  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Running in VirtualBox

Installing on VirtualBox

to update virtualbox guest additions:

for Debian 9, enable backports with contrib; to do so, add a line like

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian stretch-backports main contrib

to /etc/apt/sources.list (or better yet, a stretch-backports.list file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d);

install virtualbox-guest-dkms, kernel headers, and, optionally, virtualbox-guest-x11 (for the graphical guest utilities):

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-x11 linux-headers-$(uname -r)

Mounting A Disk Across SSH

On the system you want to mount the disk on (such as a Raspian Desktop in VirtualBox)

sudo apt-get sshfs

make sure your mountpoint (locally) exists

mkdir /home/pi/pi2

set up hostname aliases

sudo vi /etc/hosts pi2

then mount

sshfs pi@pi2:/home/pi /home/pi/pi2
